Tumblr and Lady Gaga the next threat to Facebook?

TumblrEveryone is debating if Google+ can compete with Facebook, even going as far as to outline how Google can beat Facebook. But all the focus on Google+ has overshadowed a possibly more important event in the battle against Facebook - Lady Gaga joins Tumblr. Is this similar to when Telia Toquila was requited to MySpace?

DeWolfe and Anderson went out and strategically recruited up-and-coming bands such as the Billionaire Boys Club and pinup girls such as Tila Tequila to join the site. Initially, you had to be a Myspace member to see the resulting profile pages, listen to the music, or check out the bikini pics.

“Yes, social networks of 2010 have much better usability, have better developed 3rd-party platforms and many more people are connected. But let’s be honest – they’re mostly the same old shit, reinvented, with more people online and trained.” Social Networking: The Past

Do we really need another social browser?

RockMelt popped on the scene with a new social browser. The first question is why would I need another browser? Visiting the beta site I was prompted to enter my Facebook Connect to be given early access, however I’m not the biggest user of Facebook. In fact when I think of my friends who I would consider heavy Facebook users, many of them are still using IE and have trouble syncing their iPods from time to time. RockMelt would never even fall on these users radars.

And from the screenshots it looks like Facebook is central to the browser experience, but like I said I don’t really use Facebook. So outside of the few techies that are also heavy Facebook users I’m not sure who RockMelt is targeted at. Flock already failed, I expect the same for RockMelt.

“But Digg, based in San Francisco, still struggles against the same force that has made MySpace an also-ran: Consumers don’t have an endless appetite for social networks, and only the most appealing and useful survive. All of which leads to a harrowing question for the company: Will people who are already on Facebook and Twitter become regular users of Digg as well, or have those sites already made Digg irrelevant?” Can Digg Find Its Way in the Crowd?
